The history of Awake Boards

Awake founder and wakeboarder Philip Werner has been experimenting with electrically powered surfboards since 2012.

After co-founding the company Radinn, he launched Awake Boards in 2017. His goal was to create jetboards of the highest quality with outstanding riding characteristics.

Since 2022, the company has also been producing the VINGA Carve eFoil in addition to the RÄVIK Jetboards. E-SURFER has been meeting the team from Sweden every year since 2018 for interviews and product demonstrations.

Why Awake leads the jetboard market

In particular, Awake Boards has established itself as the market leader in jetboards (electric surfboards that ride on the water surface) in recent years.

The design, quality and performance of the four jetboard models RÄVIK Explore, RÄVIK Adventure, RÄVIK Ultimate and BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE are truly outstanding. The special jet propulsion from Awake Boards is the secret of its power. Unlike other electric surfboards, which draw in water from above, the Awake jet propulsion is mounted perpendicular to the water surface.

This prevents the suction of air, which can lead to interruptions.

All Awake models at a glance

Awake builds four jetboards and one eFoil. All five run on the same Flex XR 4 battery and the same remote, the Flex Hand Controller 4 — so accessories can be swapped between models.

Awake RÄVIK Explore — €12,388

The largest volume in the range at 121 litres, 11 kW, up to 40 km/h and up to 60 minutes of ride time. The hull is thermoformed rather than carbon. The RÄVIK Explore is the most affordable way into the brand.

Awake RÄVIK Adventure — €17,990

71 litres of volume, 11 kW, up to 50 km/h and up to 45 minutes of ride time, 41.5 kg ready to ride. The RÄVIK Adventure has a V-shaped hull and was previously called the Rävik 3.

Awake RÄVIK Ultimate — €19,499

51 litres, 11 kW, up to 55 km/h, up to 35 minutes of ride time and, at 34.5 kg, the lightest jetboard in the range. The RÄVIK Ultimate is a carbon-fibreglass composite in unibody construction with a dual channel hull and was previously called the Rävik S.

BRABUS x Awake SHADOW EXPLORE — €19,421

A collaboration with BRABUS built on the Explore platform: 121 litres, 11 kW, over 55 km/h and up to 60 minutes. According to Awake, the BRABUS Mode unlocks 40 percent more acceleration. The SHADOW EXPLORE is limited to 77 units worldwide; footstraps, carbon fins and a travel bag are included.

Awake VINGA Carve — €17,148

The brand's only eFoil: 77 litres, 4 to 8.2 kW, 45 km/h and up to 120 minutes of ride time with the Flex XR 4. The VINGA Carve weighs 34.5 kg ready to ride, has a fully shrouded Linear Jet and comes with Cloud Wings as standard. Awake no longer builds the earlier Vinga Adventure and Vinga Ultimate models.

Which Awake suits whom?

The decision usually comes down to volume, not top speed. More volume means more buoyancy and an easier start; less volume means less board under your feet.

  • 121 litres — RÄVIK Explore and BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE
  • 77 litres — VINGA Carve (eFoil)
  • 71 litres — RÄVIK Adventure
  • 51 litres — RÄVIK Ultimate

On speed, the Ultimate and the SHADOW EXPLORE lead with 55 km/h and above; on ride time it is the Explore and the SHADOW EXPLORE with up to 60 minutes — and the eFoil with up to 120. If you are torn between a jetboard and an eFoil: a jetboard rides on the water, an eFoil lifts you above it on a hydrofoil. A comparison of all models is in our jetboard comparison.

What we have ridden ourselves

We have been selling electric surfboards since 2017 and have carried Awake Boards from the start. The RÄVIK Adventure, RÄVIK Ultimate and VINGA Carve are in our Berlin showroom and can be test ridden there — and we have met the team from Sweden every year since 2018.

We have not yet had the RÄVIK Explore or the BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE on the water. What you read on their product pages are manufacturer specifications and our assessment based on experience with the sister models — not a ride report. As soon as we have ridden them, our impression will appear there.

On service and spare parts: we repair Awake Boards in house and keep wear parts in stock. For questions about registration, licence plates and insurance, the E-SURFER team will advise you before you buy — seven days a week, by phone on +49 30 2060 9981.

FAQ
ANSWER TO
YOUR QUESTIONS

What are Awake Boards?

Awake Boards is a Swedish manufacturer of electric surfboards, founded in Stockholm in 2017 by Philip Werner. The brand builds four jetboards — RÄVIK Explore, RÄVIK Adventure, RÄVIK Ultimate and the BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE — plus the VINGA Carve eFoil since 2022. All models sit in the upper price segment and share the same battery and remote.

What do the Awake Boards cost?

At E-SURFER the RÄVIK Explore costs €12,388, the RÄVIK Adventure €17,990, the VINGA Carve €17,148, the BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE €19,421 and the RÄVIK Ultimate €19,499 — each including VAT and supplied with battery, charger and remote. A second battery, footstraps and a travel bag cost extra depending on the model.

Awake or Radinn?

Interestingly, the founder of Radinn (Philip Werner) left Radinn to subsequently found Awake Boards. Since Philip is very talented, Radinn boards can be ridden very well. However, he left the company because Radinn investors allegedly wanted to cut production costs. The quality of the Awake boards is a lot better. Radinn went insolvent in 2023 — there are no spare parts or service left there, whereas Awake still provides both.

How fast are the Awake Boards?

That depends on the model. Awake quotes up to 40 km/h for the RÄVIK Explore, up to 50 km/h for the RÄVIK Adventure and up to 55 km/h for the RÄVIK Ultimate. The BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE goes beyond 55 km/h, making it the fastest model in the range. The VINGA Carve eFoil reaches 45 km/h.

How much do the Awake Boards weigh?

Ready to ride including the battery, the RÄVIK Ultimate weighs 34.5 kg and the RÄVIK Adventure 41.5 kg. The Flex XR 4 battery accounts for 18.5 kg of that and can be removed for carrying — the Ultimate board alone weighs just 16 kg. The VINGA Carve also comes to 34.5 kg ready to ride, split across board, propulsion unit and battery.

How long does the battery of the Awake jet-boards last?

With the Flex XR 4 battery, Awake quotes up to 60 minutes for the RÄVIK Explore and the BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE, up to 45 minutes for the RÄVIK Adventure and up to 35 minutes for the RÄVIK Ultimate. The VINGA Carve eFoil manages up to 120 minutes. Rider weight, speed and chop affect ride time noticeably. The battery charges in around 120 minutes.

What is the maximum rider weight for Awake Boards?

Awake quotes a maximum rider weight of 120 kg, the same across all models. More important than that limit is the volume of the board: at 121 litres, the RÄVIK Explore and BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE carry considerably more buoyancy than the RÄVIK Ultimate with 51 litres. If you weigh more than 95 kg, a high-volume board makes getting up much easier.

Which Awake board should I buy?

Choose by volume, not by top speed. For beginners and heavier riders the RÄVIK Explore and BRABUS SHADOW EXPLORE with 121 litres each are the right call, the RÄVIK Adventure sits in between at 71 litres, and the RÄVIK Ultimate with 51 litres is aimed at experienced riders. If you want to fly above the water rather than ride on it, the VINGA Carve is the eFoil for you. We advise you free of charge over the phone.

Where can I buy an Awake Board?

You can buy Awake Boards from E-SURFER in Berlin or online in our jetboard shop. We have specialised in electric surfboards since 2017 and have carried Awake from the start — with our own showroom, test rides, workshop and spare parts stock. The RÄVIK Adventure, RÄVIK Ultimate and VINGA Carve are ready for test rides. Call us on +49 30 2060 9981.

Are Awake Boards allowed?

Yes — Awake jetboards and eFoils are legal in the UK; there's no craft-specific national registration or licence. The rules are local: harbour authorities and byelaws regulate personal watercraft, and powerful jetboards (PWC) are often the focus of local restrictions, while eFoils fall under the same local framework. Inland, operators like the Canal & River Trust (licence) or the River Thames (registration + insurance) apply. Overview: eFoils in the UK: rules, licences & where to ride.
